In this certificate course we will explore pruning – the good, the bad and the ugly! The course will focus on common landscape plants and how we should prune and care for them. Topics will include pruning cuts and pruning techniques; how plants respond to pruning and injury; the consequences of shearing a shrub versus using a thinning cut; how we affect flowering and fruiting by what cuts we make; and assessing a plant for structure, health, aesthetics, flowering and fruit. Bring a hand saw and scabbard, and bypass style hand pruners to field sessions. Proper PPE (steel toed boots, hard hat, safety glasses, high visibility vest) is required to participate in pruning. Comfortable gloves are recommended. For the Saturday session, bring a lunch and dress for the weather. Transportation to the pruning site is required. A computer with internet access is required for on-line content. This class is limited to 15 students. Classes run Thurs evenings in-class or on-line, 6:30-9:00pm (Feb 22, March 7, March 21) and Saturday afternoon field trips, 1:00-4:00pm (Feb 24, March 9, March 23, April 6, April 20.)
