Introduction to Plant Placement/Install  at Riverway

This course will focus on landscape plants and practical concepts related to landscape design and installation. You will leave this course with an understanding of plant selection, form, and growth habit for site-specific, long-term garden health and aesthetics. Learn how the 'right plant for right place' can greatly reduce future problems and maintenance in the landscape. Topics include site assessment, spacing, placement, layout of plant material and the overall concept of how plants work together. Learn how colour, texture, form and scale can be used in the garden to create flow, direct views, drama or contemplative areas. Classes runs 2 Thursday evenings, 6:30 - 9:00pm (Mar. 21 & Apr. 4) in-class or on-line via Zoom and 6 Saturday afternoons, 1:00 – 4pm (Mar. 23, Apr. 6, 20, May 4, 25 & Jun. 8). Saturday classes are held outdoors rain or shine. Students will need a computer with internet access for on-line content.

Permaculture Design Certificate  at Riverway

Gather with likeminded people to learn about how nature designs itself and how we can become sustainable designers ourselves. Learn how to map and design land and life, plan for emergencies, grow organic food in all four seasons and work to build a more regenerative future. The course empowers participants as permaculture designers, consultants and teachers. Graduates will be able to use the word ‘permaculture’ legally in their practice, business or project. This eco-training certificate is a practical path for greening your life, resume and portfolio. Working toward certification is not a requirement. It’s a fun and practical way to journey together in an experiential, outdoor adventure in education. Taught by a dynamic female-male team, this class caters to anyone wanting to learn regenerative design in a creative way while engaging with working systems. It is a flexible course with an ideal weekend class schedule. Catering to the busyness of modern life, if you miss a class, you can jump in on the same module in a future class at no extra cost (through the instructors) and there is no time limit to complete the certification. One on one make up classes are also available at a nominal fee.
Course Topics include design methods, patterns in nature, soils and composting, water, trees, animals, design for cool/tropical/arid climates, social permaculture, native food and medicine plants of the Coastal First Peoples, and much more. There are information sheets, interactive tools, as well as exciting living sites as our classroom. Optional hands-on activities throughout the course include: design charrettes, earthworks demonstration, integrative games, compost building, soil testing, plant & tree identification, medicine making and homesteading. This course is the only of its kind with an exciting teaching tool kit that transforms lectures into games and travels to many different permaculture farms, gardens and forest locations. Apply your learnings to the focus project for the program which is to start a map and design for where you live or an area of your choice.

In this certificate course we will explore the diversity and variety of west coast plants - from trees to perennials. You will learn how landscape plants grow and where; look at their usability and their requirements for health and vigour; discuss plant characteristics (hardiness, form, size, structure, textures, colours and fragrance); categorize what the plants are, how they grow and how we can use them; interpret plant morphology as it applies to plant identification; and discuss the importance of 'right plant right place'. Spend Saturdays exploring incredible local gardens. Class runs 2 Thurs. evenings, 6:30 - 8:30pm on-line and 6 Saturday mornings, 9:30am - 12 noon (field trips). Sat. classes are held off-site, rain or shine. Computer and internet access is required for on-line content. Transportation and entrance to garden fees required.

Restoring Soil Health on Farms/Gardens  at Riverway

Burnaby School and Continuing Education invite you to attend this multi-day workshop on restoring and nurturing your soil's biological community essential for optimal plant growth. We will explore: the soil microbiome and its beneficial role in plant growth; preparing, assembling and managing a thermophilic compost pile; how to correctly produce and apply compost extracts and teas as biological inoculants for your soil and plants; methodologies and workflows to help rebuild and maintain soil health; general identification of compost and soil microorganisms using a microscope; and project case studies, including conversations with farmers/producers who began their journey with living soil in mind.

The Art & Science of Pruning Certificate  at Riverway

In this certificate course we will explore pruning – the good, the bad and the ugly! The course will focus on common landscape plants and how we should prune and care for them. Topics will include pruning cuts and pruning techniques; how plants respond to pruning and injury; the consequences of shearing a shrub versus using a thinning cut; how we affect flowering and fruiting by what cuts we make; and assessing a plant for structure, health, aesthetics, flowering and fruit. Bring a hand saw and scabbard, and bypass style hand pruners to field sessions. Proper PPE (steel toed boots, hard hat, safety glasses, high visibility vest) is required to participate in pruning. Comfortable gloves are recommended. For the Saturday session, bring a lunch and dress for the weather. Transportation to the pruning site is required. A computer with internet access is required for on-line content. This class is limited to 15 students. Classes run Thurs evenings in-class or on-line, 6:30-9:00pm (Feb 22, March 7, March 21) and Saturday afternoon field trips, 1:00-4:00pm (Feb 24, March 9, March 23, April 6, April 20.) Dress for the weather.
